- FleetScout technology developed by sopp+sopp rolled out at Tesco sites
- First site went live in early 2025 and has already delivered measurable benefits such as reducing unreported damage and repair costs
- Tech uses high-resolution imaging and artificial intelligence to detect any new damage or issues and automatically notifies engineering team
Tesco has become the first UK retailer to incorporate FleetScout, an AI-powered vehicle inspection platform, into its operations. The retailer is using the technology to improve damage detection processes, respond more quickly to vehicle condition issues, and support the safe operation of its nationwide fleet.
FleetScout was developed by sopp+sopp, the fleet accident management specialists, to address persistent challenges faced by commercial fleet operators, including missed defects, inconsistent inspection quality, and slow repair response.
Traditional walkaround checks often rely on manual completion and can be prone to error or low driver engagement. By contrast, FleetScout delivers consistent, high-quality inspections, automatically generating condition reports and escalating issues to relevant stakeholders.
FleetScout combines drive-through vehicle scanning gantries with real-time defect alerts and centralised condition reporting. At selected Tesco sites, vehicles will pass through a dedicated FleetScout AVI (Automated Vehicle Inspection) gantry as they enter and exit the depot. The system uses high-resolution imaging and artificial intelligence to detect any new damage or issues with the vehicle’s condition. When problems are identified, the system automatically notifies Tesco’s engineering team so action can be taken immediately.
The platform was developed in close collaboration with Tesco, whose team helped define operational requirements and shape the rollout. The first site went live in early 2025 and has already delivered measurable benefits, reducing unreported damage, improving visibility of vehicle condition, and generating significant cost savings. Plans are now in place to roll out the technology to more Tesco sites over the months ahead.
Callum Langan, Managing Director at sopp+sopp explained: “This technology is a genuine game-changer for large, complex fleets. Working with Tesco, we’ve proved that proactive, AI-powered inspection can significantly improve safety, reduce risk, and deliver real operational savings at scale.”
A spokesperson at Tesco said: “Fleet safety and vehicle condition are critical to our operations, and we’re always looking for innovative ways to raise the bar. FleetScout allows us to detect damage automatically and act quickly to improve vehicle uptime.”
The platform supports both manual and automated inspections. In addition to its AVI solution, FleetScout also offers a Walkaround app that guides drivers through DVSA-compliant daily checks and integrates with fleet management systems to improve defect reporting and audit compliance.
FleetScout Central, the platform’s management system, provides a real-time view of fleet condition, inspection status and outstanding issues, while enabling direct action through suppliers and repair partners.
